The Enchantments: Your Ultimate Through-Hike Guide

Hiking The Enchantments in the Cascades is an enchanting hike to say the least. I created this Ultimate Through-Hike Guide just for you.

Previously, I had never heard of The Enchantments, but when a trip to see Mumford and Sons at The Gorge Amphitheater turned into an epic weekend of music and hiking, I was eager for the adventure.

Pro Tip: I highly recommend a show at The Gorge Amphitheater and then a ~20 mile through hike of The Enchantments.

Located in Washington, approximately 13 miles from Leavenworth, The Enchantments capture the attention (and awe!) of many hikers and climbers.

The Enchantments Through-Hike: Start at Stuart Lake Trailhead

Early on August 10th, 2019 we arrived at the Stuart Lake Trailhead.  Weather was a little precarious as the forecast called for heavy rains and thunderstorms. Spirits were somewhat low and our group was skeptical of the weather situation.  However, as we stepped onto the trail at Stuart Lake trailhead, we were hopeful the weather would hold.

Start of hike from Stuart Lake Trailhead

Four miles from Stuart Lake trailhead through an alpine forest, we emerged to discover an aquamarine wonderland at Colchuck Lake.  Dragontail Peak, at 8840 feet, towered behind a clouded vail overlooking the lake.

The trail wanders around the lake into a boulder field.  Follow the cairns to stay on the trail.  After passing a rather large boulder on the right and entering a short stent into an alpine area, we gazed upward at Aasgard Pass.

Aasgard Pass gains 1900 feet in less than in a mile, to the left of Dragontail Peak.  Continue to hug the trail to the left and set a steady pace up to the Pass.  Thankfully the weather was cooperating as this area is very exposed.

Towards the top of the pass, we negotiated a few boulders.  Cross the stream and follow the cairns.  Aasgard Pass overlooks Colchuck Lake at 7800 feet.

We rested, refueled, added layers, and regrouped with our crew at Aasgard Pass.  About 3 hours in, we had only hiked about 5-6 miles.  Only 14-15 more miles to go.  The hard part was over, or so I thought.

As we entered the Upper Enchantments, the scenery turns into a moonscape of rock and glacier lakes with sharp peaks in the background.

After Aasgard Pass, the trail is generally downhill.  Every section of The Enchantments holds its own unique beauty and is simply breathtaking.  Water is plentiful on the trail and there were lakes around every bend: Crystal Lake, Inspiration Lake, Perfection Lake, Leprechaun Lake, and concluded with Lake Viviane towards the end.

There were some very steep, downhill sections of rock scramble and boulders, which made the middle section very challenging and technical.  I would not want to hike these sections in bad weather because of the exposure. However, the continual beauty of this trail is worth the challenging hike!

Permits are hard to obtain, but would highly recommend overnight camping if you are lucky enough to win a permit. August is a popular time to visit and there were plenty of through hikers and even a runner or two.

So spectacular!

Thunder rang out over the mountains during the last 2 to 3 miles on the trail.  Thankfully, we descended into the forest and avoided any storms.  There was a short period of heavy rain, but it felt good!

I could see the car down below and wished I could jump there.  Approaching mile 20 left me a little delirious and staggering with each step.  We were the first group to finish through hiking for the day and finished around 10.5 hours.

Pro Tips:

  • If you can get a permit, do it.  The Enchantments are worth taking your time and soaking in the magical beauty.  If not, definitely through-hike it!
  • Two cars are needed: park one at Snow Lakes Trail and one at Stuart Lakes Trailhead.
  • Start at Stuart Lakes Trailhead.  You have around 5 miles of uphill, but it’s better than 15-16 miles of uphill.
  • Water is plentiful on the trail. No need to carry more than 1 Liter of water in your pack.  Just bring something to sterilize the water.
  • Start early.  Parking is tight at both trailheads.
  • This is a difficult, technical hike.  I used one hiking pole and left my other hand free to get over the boulders.  Pack light.
  • Watch the weather.  Much of the hike is exposed and would be dangerous in a storm.
  • Two great sites to read on The Enchantments: WTA  and Clever Hiker

This is a bucket list trip for sure!  I had no idea The Enchantments even existed, but they most certainly left me enchanted.
